Java has two clear seasons: the dry season from May to October is perfect for Borobudur, Bromo and temple visits, with warm sunny days and very little rain. The wet season runs November to April with daily tropical showers. July and August are the busiest months due to school holidays. Visit in the dry season for the best conditions.

Ja. Dian is opgegroeid in Java en we brengen er al jaren bijna elke zomer door met onze drie kinderen. Het is minder gepolijst dan Bali, en dat is juist de charme: tempels, vulkanen, treinen en straateten waar kinderen het nog jaren over hebben. Yogyakarta is de makkelijkste uitvalsbasis voor gezinnen.
Yes. Java is where Dian grew up, and we spend most summers there with our three kids. It is less polished than Bali, and that is the charm: temples, volcanoes, trains and street food that kids talk about for years. Yogyakarta is the easiest base for families.
Begin in Yogyakarta. Borobudur, Prambanan en de gezinsactiviteiten in de stad liggen allemaal dichtbij, en de stad is overzichtelijk en ontspannen. Voeg Malang toe voor watervallen, de gekleurde kampungs en als uitvalsbasis voor Bromo. Jakarta is prima om te landen, maar geen vakantiebasis met jonge kinderen.
Start in Yogyakarta. Borobudur, Prambanan and the city's family activities are all close by, and the city is compact and relaxed. Add Malang for waterfalls, the painted villages and as your base for Bromo. Jakarta is fine for arriving, but not a holiday base with young kids.

The dry season, roughly May to October, is the most reliable and it is when we usually go. July and August are also Indonesian school holidays, so book trains and hotels early. In the wet season the mornings are often still dry, so plan outdoor visits early in the day.

Between cities, take the train. Indonesian trains are clean, punctual and comfortable, and kids love them. Book through the KAI Access app. For day trips to Borobudur or the waterfalls around Malang, hire a private driver. In town, Grab and Gojek are easy.

Do both, at different times of day. We go to Borobudur as soon as the gates open, before the heat, and to Prambanan in the late afternoon when the light is beautiful. Prambanan is flatter and easier with a toddler; Borobudur has more stairs.

Yes, with older kids who can handle a middle-of-the-night start and the cold. Sunrise trips leave in the dark and it is cold at the top, so bring warm layers. Stay the night in Cemoro Lawang or Tosari. With a toddler we would skip sunrise and go later in the morning.
Het uitkijkpunt bovenaan is makkelijk voor alle leeftijden. De afdaling de kloof in is steil, nat en gaat deels via ladders, dus die raden we alleen aan voor zelfverzekerde oudere kinderen. Kabut Pelangi in de buurt is een rustiger alternatief.
The viewpoint at the top is easy for all ages. The descent into the gorge is steep, wet and partly on ladders, so we only recommend it for confident older kids. Kabut Pelangi nearby is a quieter alternative.
In onze ervaring wel. Mensen zijn hartelijk en vooral lief voor kinderen. De echte risico's zijn verkeer, hitte en buikklachten: werk met een chauffeur, plan rond de middaghitte en drink alleen flessenwater. Kleed je bedekt bij tempels en buiten toeristische plekken, Java is conservatiever dan Bali.
In our experience, yes. People are warm and especially kind to children. The real risks are traffic, heat and upset stomachs: use a driver, plan around the midday heat and drink bottled water only. Dress modestly at temples and outside tourist areas, as Java is more conservative than Bali.
Nee, meestal goedkoper. Hotels, eten en chauffeurs kosten minder, zeker in Yogyakarta en Malang. Lokale warungs zijn heerlijk en erg betaalbaar. De entreekaarten voor de grote tempels zijn voor buitenlanders de grootste losse uitgave.
No, usually cheaper. Hotels, food and drivers cost less, especially in Yogyakarta and Malang. Local warungs are excellent and very affordable. Entrance tickets for the big temples are the largest single cost for foreign visitors.
Ja, neem altijd wat mee. Pinnen werkt in hotels, malls en grotere restaurants, maar warungs, markten, parkeren en kleine entreeprijzen zijn contant. In de steden vind je makkelijk een pinautomaat. Haal geld op voordat je naar het platteland of de watervallen gaat.
Yes, always carry some. Cards work in hotels, malls and larger restaurants, but warungs, markets, parking and small entrance fees are cash only. ATMs are easy to find in cities. Withdraw before heading out to the countryside or the waterfalls.
Java surprised us. We came expecting chaos and heat, and found a country within a country: colonial cities, active volcanoes you can climb with older kids, and a food culture that made Bali feel familiar by comparison. We have been multiple times with our three kids and keep finding things we missed the first time.
Java is big and genuinely hard to cover well. We write about the parts that hold up for families, like Yogyakarta, the Bromo region and the cross-island route from Bali, and we are honest about what doesn’t work with young children yet.
